Adjust default channel type (SD or HD version)
The example below shows how to hide SD duplicate channels from the box so that channel changes will always go to the HD version of the channel.
- Click the MENU button on your remote
- Select Settings
- Select Display
- Select Preferences
- Set Guide HD Channels to Hide SD Duplicates
Turn off Sound Effects
Turn this setting off to prevent occasional bonking noises in recordings for some circumstances.
When web tuning, we have a setting that will periodically send an exit command to keep the box from going into a standby state. This may create a bonk sound when the box interprets the command as invalid.
Example: Nothing is on the DirecTV box screen and an Exit command is sent = BONK noise.
- Click the MENU button on your remote
- Select Settings
- Select Audio
- Set Sound Effects to Off
If recordings have a BONK noise every few seconds, it could be caused by someone turning on the "Send Guide Exit Command," and not turning off the Sound Effects on the DirecTV box.
The resolution is to either turn off "Send Guide Exit Command" -or- Turn OFF Sound Effects on the DirecTV box (Menu > Settings > Audio > Sound Effects: OFF)
DIRECTV HD DVR, HD, and DVR (R22 only) receivers have a power-saving feature that automatically puts the receiver in standby after four hours of inactivity. To turn your receiver back on once it's gone into power-saving mode, just press any of the following buttons on your remote: POWER, ON, GUIDE, LIST, MENU, INFO, CHANNEL up/down. (This option may not be available depending on the receiver.)
To disable automatic power-saving mode:
- Click the MENU button on your remote
- Select Settings
- Select Power Saving
- Select Off
- Click the MENU button on your remote
- Select Settings
- Select Display
- Select TV Ratio
- Set to WideScreen
- Click the MENU button on your remote
- Select Settings
- Select Display
- Select Video
- Set Native to Off
- Set Screen Format to Original format
EXCEPTION: CSPAN is not broadcast in HD with DirecTV. When the H24 or H25 upscales CSPAN to HD using the Original Format screen format setting, the resulting picture will fill the screen horizontally with black bars on top and bottom and faces will be stretched slightly width-wise. In this situation, you can set the Screen Format to Crop on the DirecTV box to make CSPAN look correct when the set-top box upscales it to HD. - Set Bar Color to gray or black depending on the customer's preference
Step 3: Set the resolution
- Click the MENU button on your remote
- Select Settings
- Select Display
- Select TV Resolutions
- Uncheck all resolutions except for the one you want
Step 4: Set the RES button (if there is one on the front of the receiver)
- Some receivers will have the RES button on the front that overrides the software settings on the receiver. (Some receivers have the resolution display on the front 480i/480p/720p/1080i/1080p)
- Press the RES button until you see 720p (if you don't have the resolution display on the front, you'll see it in the picture of your signal)

H24 boxes often don't have their ethernet port active and H25 boxes don't have an ethernet port at all. To get around this, customers can use the device linked below to provide network connectivity through their satellite coax connections.
