Best Practices Relating to Windows Updates

Periodically installing Windows Critical and Security updates on your SnapStream servers is encouraged. However, please keep our best practices in min when installing Windows Updates.

  • We suggest that each SnapStream System NOT be set to install Windows Updates automatically. Doing so can cause the SnapStream systems to automatically reboot on occasion, and cause unexpected interruptions in your recording schedule. Automatic Updates are disabled by default on SnapStream servers.

  • It's recommended that you schedule a specific time to install critical and security updates. This will help avoid unexpected interruptions in your recording schedule.

  • It is best to shut down the SnapStream Broker Service before running Windows Updates. Stopping and disabling the SnapStream Broker Service will shutdown the SnapStream software completely. This will help ensure that the software shuts down gracefully and complete any pending transactions.

  • Avoid installing optional driver updates.  Modifying the drivers on SnapStream systems can cause unforeseen issues. SnapStream servers are designed and tested with specific hardware and driver packages. Modifying this configuration may result in reduced functionality.

  • Install Windows Feature Updates with caution. These are major updates that increase the Windows build number and come bundled with several new Windows features. Sometimes these new features can interfere with the operation of SnapStream.

  • Always test SnapStream functionality after applying Window Updates.

Some SnapStream encoders, that were shipped after April of 2018, run on a LTSC (Long Term Service Branch) version of Windows. This version of Windows does not receive Feature Updates. Feature updates are the updates that increase the Windows version (1607, 1809, 21H2, etc). While this version of Windows will not receive Feature Updates, the version will still receive critical and security updates throughout the expect life of the appliance. Feature Updates should NOT be installed manually on these machines.
