HDMI Television Sources and SnapStream

It is possible to record content via HDMI using supported Encoders, which is effective for video cameras. However, it is not recommended for recording from cable boxes or satellite receivers due to HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection). Consider the following:

HDCP Protection

SnapStream cannot record HDCP-protected content over HDMI. If the encoder detects an HDCP flag from the source, the content will not be passed to the SnapStream system for recording. This is common when connecting cable boxes or satellite receivers via HDMI.

Closed Captions

Recording closed captions via HDMI alone is not possible. To capture closed captions, it will be necessary to connect the yellow composite video cable in addition to the HDMI connection. The yellow composite video connection is used specifically for pulling in closed captions, while audio and video are pulled from the HDMI connection. Some devices only allow an HDMI connection OR a composite connection, but not both at the same time.

Some cable boxes and satellite receivers may stop outputting component video when they detect HDMI usage. In such cases, disconnecting HDMI and restarting the device may be necessary for component video output to resume.
